Open Space: Sounds of the future

Musica, Impulse Centre (BE)

Discover the future sounds of Dessel: a unique concert

Open Spaces are productions that directly engage the audience in the creative process. Local communities new to music work with a curating team to create a musical work that may be presented at a partner’s music festival. Although a quality artistic result is a goal, the priority is to create a meaningful musical experience for audiences. Open Spaces represent a safe zone for testing different techniques that will be re-tested in different cultural contexts.

Students from the Academy of Music and Word go on a unique journey through the time and sounds of Dessel. This project, led by DJ/Producers, considers what Dessel might sound like 300 years from now.
The process begins by conducting interviews and recording existing sounds from Dessel, which are then woven into their own compositions. During two workshops, provided by Musi-co, the students are introduced to the world of artificial intelligence (AI). The students’ compositions are then run through an AI engine, designed by Musi-co, which translates the music into a futuristic sound that could be representative of Dessel 300 years from now.

The choice of these 300 years is not accidental. It symbolizes the time required for low-level radioactive waste to degrade and become safe. This waste is currently stored at the Tabloo site. This project is a collaboration between Musica Impulse Center and Tabloo, with the goal of having young people develop an imagination about what 300 years means for our society.

After the AI translation, students will work to humanize these futuristic sounds again, so that the music forms a connection between the present, the future and the history of Dessel.

This project not only provides a creative and innovative platform for Academy students, but also contributes to a deeper understanding of the long-term effects of our actions on the environment and society.
Through this project, students are encouraged to think about their role as artists and citizens in shaping the future of their community and the world as a whole.
